Those are useful questions to bring to a training session—and to ask again before a client deadline. The AI programming at Post|Production World New York[3](https://blog.fmctraining.com/fmc-forward/working-editors-guide-ai-ppw-new-york-2026#source-3) offers several ways into that conversation. Photo: supplied P|PW NY 2025 archive. ### Expectation and preparation **More than 94%** of respondents to NCS’s 2026 sentiment survey expected AI to have the biggest operational impact that year. **14.6%** said their organizations were fully prepared to implement or expand AI workflows. The sample comprised 309 self-selected readers surveyed in November–December 2025, not a representative industry sample. These figures describe expectations and preparedness, not proven gains from a particular product. They are a reason to make evaluation explicit: what problem are you solving, what counts as acceptable output, and who needs to approve the result? ## Begin with the footage and the feature Before testing, establish which material your team permits you to use and where it may be processed. Check the specific feature, settings, and service involved. An application can contain both local and cloud functions, so an application name alone does not answer the question. Adobe provides a concrete example. Its Speech to Text documentation[5](https://blog.fmctraining.com/fmc-forward/working-editors-guide-ai-ppw-new-york-2026#source-5) says offline transcription is available in Premiere 22.2 and later once the relevant language pack is installed. Its Generative Extend documentation[6](https://blog.fmctraining.com/fmc-forward/working-editors-guide-ai-ppw-new-york-2026#source-6) says that feature uses a cloud model and requires an internet connection. Those are different processing arrangements inside the same editing ecosystem. Jeff Greenberg’s session on privacy-first local AI is a useful topic to investigate with that distinction in mind. The published program lists it alongside his reliability-scorecard session. Ask which components run locally, what must be downloaded first, and what happens when the workstation is disconnected. Also check the hardware and software version used in the demonstration. ### Questions to bring - Where are the source media, prompts, and generated results processed and stored? - Which settings or features change that behavior? - What material has our team approved for the test? - Can another editor reproduce the result on the systems we actually use? ## Measure the complete task, including repairs A generation timer is only one part of an editing task. Include preparation, upload or model setup, processing, review, fixes, and export. If a tool produces a fast first pass but needs extensive correction, the first-pass time will give you an incomplete comparison. For a transcription test, keep the interview and acceptance criteria the same. Check names, terminology, speaker changes, and meaning. For a visual test, look beyond an attractive still frame: inspect motion, continuity, unwanted changes, and the exported file. Record what failed as carefully as what worked. ### Illustrative time comparison—not a performance claim **Existing method: 30 minutes.** AI-assisted method: 5 minutes setup + 4 minutes processing + 12 minutes checking and fixes = **21 minutes**. In this hypothetical example, the complete task saves 9 minutes, or 30%, if output quality is equivalent. Replace these numbers with your own measurements. Use Greenberg’s scorecard topic to sharpen your own criteria. Avoid assuming that success on one shot, language, or workstation will transfer unchanged to the next project. These suggested questions are a way to prepare; they are not promises about a particular demonstration or take-home deliverable. ### Editing: what becomes easier to find, change, or revise? Luisa Winters’s session on reimagining editing workflows with AI is a starting point for timeline questions. Bring a recurring task, such as organizing interviews or building an assembly. Ask where you retain control over selection, pacing, and revisions, and how the result travels through your existing project. ### VFX: does the shot survive the actual delivery? Eran Stern’s sessions on generative VFX and integrating 2D and 3D elements with AI and After Effects connect naturally to compositing questions. Ask how to assess motion, lighting, edges, grain, and consistency across frames. Test at the intended delivery settings, and document any correction work. Feature limitations matter here. Adobe’s current Generative Extend documentation[6](https://blog.fmctraining.com/fmc-forward/working-editors-guide-ai-ppw-new-york-2026#source-6) lists generated video as 8-bit SDR, including when source media has greater bit depth or is HDR. That is a specific delivery constraint to check before incorporating an extension into a finishing workflow—not a statement about every AI tool. ### Production: what changes before the timeline? Bring questions about how a proposed tool affects the brief, review process, versioning, and responsibilities across the team. Write down who needs to be involved before a new step becomes routine. ## Bring this five-part evaluation card home ### A practical test record - **Task:** one repeatable job with an existing baseline. - **Inputs:** approved material, software version, hardware, and settings. - **Quality:** written acceptance criteria and the review needed to meet them. - **Total effort:** setup, processing, corrections, export, and direct costs. - **Handoff:** what a colleague receives, what stays editable, and how to reproduce the result. Start with a small internal test. Keep your established method available while you evaluate. Repeat the test with a second type of material before broadening its use. A useful outcome may be a narrow approval—one task, one type of footage, one documented process—rather than a change to the entire pipeline. Your notes should make the next decision easier. Someone who missed the session should be able to understand what you tried, why it helped, and when to avoid it. That makes the learning useful beyond the room.
